The Angels' Share by Brooks Carver

Out of the chaotic nineteenth-century period of Reconstruction comes former Sergeant Jack Grady of the Stonewall Brigade, his family, and a diverse cast of Southern characters trying to rebuild their ravaged land.

The first few chapters portray his return from the War to his farm in northeastern Tennessee. He finds the place in ruins, livestock gone and his family near starvation. Jack and his wife, Annajean with the help of their two sons and a Cherokee friend, manage to get a small crop planted.

In early July, l865, for badly needed cash, Jack and two other hardened veterans of the Confederacy deliver a load of whiskey from Knoxville to New Orleans through the lawless and war torn South. The journey highlights a rich tapestry of life and adventure during this bleak period. A horrific incident in the Louisiana bayous transforms Jack Grady into a legend, a heroic symbol so badly needed by people beaten down by historic events.

Meet this beleaguered farm family from the mountains and get a perspective of our nation that transcends and enhances textbook history.

The Angels’ Share was awarded the bronze medal for historical fiction in ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award in 2003.
